Recently, the Shandong Provincial Department of Education announced the list of institutions selected for the construction of Future Technology Colleges and Specialized Characteristic Colleges in Shandong Province for 2023. College of Geodesy and Geomatics of SDUST has been approved as a Future Technology College of Shandong Province, while College of Energy and Mining Engineering, College of Mathematics and Systems Science (Big Data College of Alibaba Cloud), and College of Electronic and Information Engineering have been approved as Specialized Characteristic Colleges of Shandong Province. The number of approvals ranks first among universities in Shandong Province.

It is reported that to actively serve national major strategies and tasks such as ecological conservation and high-quality development along the Yellow River, the construction of pilot zones for green, low-carbon, and high-quality development, as well as to meet the needs of economic and social development, and to deepen the integration of industry and education, as well as the integration of science and education, further enhancing the scientific and technological innovation and social service capabilities of higher education in Shandong Province, the Shandong Provincial Department of Education and several other departments jointly launched the "Implementation Plan for the Construction of Demonstration Specialized Characteristic Colleges in Shandong Province," and carried out the construction of provincial Future Technology Colleges and Specialized Characteristic Colleges for 2023. The first batch supports the construction of 9 provincial Future Technology Colleges and 61 provincial Specialized Characteristic Colleges.
