Introduction

Shandong University of Science and Technology is noted for its strengths in basic and applied research, capabilities in scientific and technological development and inter-disciplinary advantages in integrated science and technology. It boasts a solid academic foundation and advantages in Mining Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Geological Resources and Engineering, Control Theory and Control Engineering, Computer Software and Theory, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Design and Theory. The university now has eighty research institutes established in such fields as engineering technology, social sciences and the humanities. From 2001 to 2006, the university has undertaken 2313 research projects, including National High-Tech Research and Development programs a.k.a. 863 Program, National Basic Research Development programs a.k.a. 973 Program, National Key Research Programs of Science and Technology, Key Projects in the National Science & Technology Pillar Program in the Eleventh Five-year Plan Period, National Natural Sciences Fund Program with 237 scientific achievements authenticated and forty-four holding patents. The university won six National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, 137 ministerial and provincial Science and Technology Prize. The faculty have published 501 monographs and 8539 academic papers with 616 of the latter collected in SCI、EI and ISTP. The scientific research funds of the university increased from 34.656 million RMB in 2001 to 135 million RMB in 2006 by 39.1 percent every year. From 2004 to 2006, the scientific research funds exceeded 100 million RMB for three successive years.
